  7. This readme file contains important information about this
  8. PowerAlbum release.  It includes a list of new features,
  9. restrictions, and solutions to problems you may encounter.

  23. 1. Error Message Asking For Drive D:
  24. ------------------------------------

  26.   PowerAlbum DISC error messages are not drive letter sensitive.  That is
  27.   PowerAlbum asks you to insert discs in drive D: regardless of what
  28.   drive letter is actually assigned to your CD-ROM drive.  Insert your
  29.   discs into your CD-ROM drive, select OK to remove the error message and
  30.   run the program normally.

  33. Adding Video Files
  34.  
  35.   If you plan on adding Video files to your albums, you must first
  36.   run Setup on the enclosed CD-ROM.  This will install the Microsoft
  37.   Video for Windows drivers onto your system so that it may be used by
  38.   PowerAlbum.

  40. File SOUNDS.ALB
  41.   A dummy file called SOUNDS.ALB can be found on the program CD.  This file
  42.   is used by the PowerAlbum 2.1 installation program, and serves no other
  43.   purpose than to facilitate a smooth installation during a Standard Install.  
  44.   You may notice this file being updated after initially opening PowerAlbum
  45.   2.1.  This file is completely empty and is not meant to be used after the
  46.   installation.

  49. 2. New and Improved Features
  50. ----------------------------
  51.   This release contains a substantial amount of new functionality.
  52.  
  53.     a.  NOTEBOOK STYLES.
  54.     There are 3 notebook styles form which to choose from. See
  55.     the "Options|Styles" menu item for a selection.
  56.  
  57.     b.  MULTIMEDIA SUPPORT.
  58.     You can now add Sound (WAV) and Video (AVI) files to your
  59.     albums.  If you plan on adding and/or playing video files,
  60.     you must first install the Microsoft Video Drivers by
  61.     running Setup on the enclosed CD-ROM.  You must have a
  62.     sound card properly installed on your system in order to
  63.     play sound files.

  65.     c.  PLAY SOUNDS AND DISPLAY PICTURES SIMULTANEOUSLY.
  66.     Select the "Picture|Assign sounds to pictures" or
  67.     "Picture|Assign pictures to sounds" menu items to
  68.     associate pictures and sounds.

  70.     d.  REMOVABLE MEDIA SUPPORT.
  71.     When adding pictures from removable media (e.g. CD-ROMs,
  72.     floppy disks, etc.), you can tell PowerAlbum the name of
  73.     the disk and it will prompt you for that disk later.

  75.     e.  AUTOMATIC ALBUM SCANNING.
  76.     Have PowerAlbum flip through it's pages and display the
  77.     entire album contents for you without touching a single
  78.     key.  You can select the types of albums items to display
  79.     (i.e. pictures, videos) and for the number of seconds.

  81.     f.  EXPORT PICTURES TO NEW FORMATS.
  82.     You can now convert your pictures to other file formats.
  83.     See the Picture Export Restrictions section for a list of
  84.     restrictions.

  86.     g.  IMPROVED THUMBNAILS.
  87.     Select Options|Preferences to change the number of colors
  88.     used.  PowerAlbum will support video cards which can 
  89.     display 16, 256, 65536, and 16 million colors.  If you
  90.     have existing albums, you must rebuild the thumbnails in
  91.     order to get the improved thumbnails.

  93.     h.  CREATE CATEGORIES AUTOMATICALLY.
  94.     You can now have PowerAlbum scan your hard disk and create
  95.     category names for you.  The category names can be based
  96.     on the type of file or the path it originated from.

  98.     i.  COPY PATHS TO CLIPBOARD.
  99.     You can now copy a picture or sound file path (or the
  100.     picture) to the clipboard as text for pasting into another
  101.     application's edit control.

  105. 3. Information for Calendar Creator Users
  106. -----------------------------------------
  107.   PowerAlbum is fully compatible with versions 2.10 and above of
  108.   Calendar Creator for Windows.  However, in order to access many
  109.   of the new features.  You must run PowerAlbum as a standalone
  110.   product.  This is because the menu bar is not available while
  111.   being run from within Calendar Creator.
  112.  
  113.   For example, if you wish to use a new notebook style, load your
  114.   album from the standalone version of PowerAlbum, change the
  115.   style and then save the album.  The next time you access it
  116.   from Calendar Creator, your album will be displayed in the new 
  117.   notebook style.

  120.   PowerAlbum 2.1 can also work with albums from Calendar Creator
  121.   for Windows, version 1.00.  However, to use these albums, it
  122.   is necessary to open a New album in PowerAlbum 2.1 and Merge
  123.   the old album into the new one.

  126. 4.  Picture Export Restrictions.
  127. ------------------------------------------
  128.   The following limitations apply to Exporting Pictures in
  129.   PowerAlbum:
  130.  
  131.     1)  No vector image can be exported to a JPG.
  132.     2)  No JPG can be exported to a vector.           
  133.     3)  No PCD can be exported to another raster format.

  135.   We anticipate that these restrictions will not exist in a
  136.   future release.

  140. 5.  Video Import and Playing Problems.
  141. ------------------------------------------------
  142.   If you cannot add or play video files try the following:
  143.  
  144.   a) Make sure you have installed the Video For Windows Runtime
  145.      drivers as described in the Installation section above.
  146.  
  147.   b) If you are recieving error message #675, select File|Run
  148.      from the Program Manager and enter "REGEDIT".  Once REGEDIT
  149.      is running, select File|Merge Registration File... menu item
  150.      and select the VFW.REG file in your program directory.

  152.      Exit Windows, and try again.
